The Five Pillars
"Islam is built upon five," said the Prophet ﷺ. Pillars hold up a building; the building is a life. Here is each one: what it is, why it exists, and where on this site to learn it properly.
Pillar 1
Shahada · The declaration of faith
What: Testifying: "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is His messenger." Said sincerely once, it makes you a Muslim; said with presence, it renews you for a lifetime.
Why: Everything else stands on this. It clears the heart of every rival claim (money, status, fear of people) and points a whole life at one centre.
Pillar 2
Salah · The five daily prayers
What: Five short prayers anchored to the sun: dawn, midday, afternoon, sunset, and night. About twenty-five minutes a day in total.
Why: The day gets a rhythm and the soul gets appointments. The Prophet ﷺ called prayer the pillar of the religion, and it is the first thing asked about on the Day of Judgement.
Pillar 3
Zakat · The obligatory charity
What: 2.5% of your surplus wealth, once a year, to the poor and other named recipients. Not a tip: a right the poor hold over the wealthy.
Why: Zakat means purification and growth: it cleans wealth of greed and quietly runs one of history's oldest welfare systems.
Pillar 4
Sawm · Fasting Ramadan
What: Dawn to sunset, no food or drink, for the month in which the Quran was revealed, with exemptions for the ill, travellers, and others.
Why: A month-long training in self-mastery, empathy with the hungry, and undistracted nearness to God. Its goal is stated in the Quran: "that you may attain taqwa" (2:183).
Pillar 5
Hajj · The pilgrimage
What: Once in a lifetime, for those physically and financially able: the journey to Makkah to walk in the footsteps of Abraham, Hagar, and Ishmael.
Why: Millions of every colour and class, in two plain white cloths, indistinguishable, circling one centre. It is the Day of Judgement rehearsed, and the family of Abraham remembered.
Alongside the five pillars of practice sit six pillars of belief: God, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the decree. The explore journey walks through them all.
