Depth · The second lap
Deepening tracks
The five pillars are standing; the basics run on rails. What now? The tradition's answer: the voluntary acts, which the famous hadith qudsi says draw the servant onward "until I love him". Three tracks, each independent; take one at a time.
Track 1 · The whole Quran in a year
The Quran divides into 30 parts (juz); at roughly two pages a day with translation, the whole book takes a year with an unhurried heart. Read the orientation first if you haven't.
Months 1-2
Juz 1-5 · the great Madinan chapters begin: Al-Baqarah and Al-Imran, slowly; they are the year's steepest climb and its richest.
Months 3-4
Juz 6-10 · law, community, and the battle narratives: an-Nisa through al-Anfal.
Months 5-6
Juz 11-15 · the prophet stories cluster: Yunus, Hud, Yusuf ("the most beautiful of stories"), Ibrahim.
Months 7-8
Juz 16-20 · Maryam, Ta-Ha, the Prophets, the Light Verse, the Criterion.
Months 9-10
Juz 21-25 · Luqman's advice to his son, the Ya-Sin heartland, the throne-room chapters.
Months 11-12
Juz 26-30 · the drumbeat of the short Makkan surahs, ending where new Muslims begin. About two pages a day does it; miss days freely and just continue.
Track 2 · The night prayer (tahajjud)
The Quran's description of the devoted: "their sides forsake their beds" (32:16), and the Prophet ﷺ called night prayer the honour of the believer. It is also more attainable than its reputation:
- The minimum viable tahajjud: wake 20 minutes before Fajr, pray two slow rakahs in the dark, make du'a. That's it; that counts fully.
- Build by frequency, not length: twice a week beats one heroic night monthly. Anchor it to Fajr so the wake-up serves both.
- The last third of the night is the advertised window: the hadith says the Lord descends to the nearest heaven asking "who calls upon Me, that I may answer?". Bring your biggest requests there.
- Witr (an odd-numbered closing prayer, even one rakah) seals the night; many simply pray it after Isha until tahajjud becomes regular.
Everything you know from the prayer guide applies; the only new ingredient is the alarm clock and the secret: nobody sees this prayer, which is exactly its power.
Track 3 · The voluntary fasts
Ramadan is the obligation; these are the sunnah rhythm that keeps its engine warm all year:
- Mondays and Thursdays: the Prophet's ﷺ weekly practice ("deeds are presented on them, and I love that mine are presented while I fast"). Start with one Monday.
- The white days: the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each Hijri month (full-moon days); three days a month, which he said equals fasting forever. The dashboard shows today's Hijri date.
- The season peaks: Arafah (expiates two years), Ashura (expiates one), the six of Shawwal, and generously in Sha'ban.
Mechanics are identical to Ramadan (refresher), but breaking a voluntary fast when needed is permitted without makeup in most schools: the voluntary track is mercy-geared by design.
The inner counterpart to all three tracks is the work on the heart itself: purification of the heart is the fourth track.
