The short surahs, understood

Al-Fatiha · الْفَاتِحَة
The Opening: seven verses recited in every rakah of every prayer, at least seventeen times a day. It is a conversation: the first half praises God, the second half asks, and a sound hadith says God answers each line as His servant says it.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Everything begins in His name, and the two names chosen here are both from mercy: ar-Rahman (mercy vast as an ocean) and ar-Rahim (mercy that reaches you personally).
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.
Praise belongs to Him not just for what He gives but for who He is: Lord (Rabb) means owner, sustainer, and the one raising you stage by stage, of all worlds and every creature in them.
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Ar-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The mercy names repeat immediately after "Lord of all worlds", so power is never imagined without mercy.
مَـٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Māliki yawmi d-dīn
Master of the Day of Judgement.
He owns the Day when every account settles. Fear and hope balance: mercy in the previous verse, justice in this one.
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
Iyyāka naʿbudu wa-iyyāka nastaʿīn
You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help.
The hinge of the surah, where praise turns to address: You alone. Worship and asking for help both point one way, which frees you from serving or fearing anything else.
ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭa l-mustaqīm
Guide us to the straight path,
The single most repeated request of Muslim life: guidance, pictured as a straight path, something you walk, not just believe in.
صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
Ṣirāṭa lladhīna anʿamta ʿalayhim ghayri l-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa-lā ḍ-ḍāllīn
the path of those You have blessed, not of those You are displeased with, or those who are astray.
The path is defined by the people who walked it: those God favoured (the prophets and the righteous), not those who knew truth and rejected it, nor those who wandered without knowledge.
Al-Ikhlas · الْإِخْلَاص
Sincerity: four verses that define God, revealed when the Prophet ﷺ was asked to describe his Lord. He said it equals a third of the Quran, because a third of the Quran's message is who God is.
قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
Qul huwa llāhu aḥad
Say: He is Allah, the One.
"Say: He is Allah, One." Ahad is not just "one" in number but unique, indivisible, without parts or partners: the whole creed in one word.
ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ
Allāhu ṣ-ṣamad
Allah, the Eternal, Absolute.
As-Samad: the Eternal Refuge, the one all creation depends on while He depends on nothing, the rock every need finally rests against.
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
Lam yalid wa-lam yūlad
He neither begets nor was begotten.
He has no origin and no offspring: a gentle, direct line between Islam and its neighbours' beliefs, stated without polemic.
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
Wa-lam yakun lahū kufuwan aḥad
And there is none comparable to Him.
And nothing whatsoever resembles Him. Every mental image you form is not Him; He is beyond the image.
Al-Falaq · الْفَلَق
The Daybreak: the first of the two "seeking refuge" surahs (al-Mu'awwidhatayn), recited for protection, morning and evening and before sleep.
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ
Qul aʿūdhu bi-rabbi l-falaq
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak,
Refuge is sought with the Lord of the daybreak: the One who splits night with dawn can split any darkness with relief.
مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
Min sharri mā khalaq
From the evil of what He has created,
Protection from the evil in created things: the world contains real harm, and the believer is realistic about it, not naive.
وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ
Wa-min sharri ghāsiqin idhā waqab
And from the evil of darkness when it settles,
Darkness as it settles: the cover under which harm moves, literal and moral.
وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ فِى ٱلْعُقَدِ
Wa-min sharri n-naffāthāti fī l-ʿuqad
And from the evil of those who blow on knots,
From hidden malice, the classical reference is to sorcery: harm that works unseen.
وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ
Wa-min sharri ḥāsidin idhā ḥasad
And from the evil of an envier when he envies.
And from the envier when he envies: the eye that resents blessing. The surah names the dangers precisely so you can hand each one over.
An-Nas · النَّاس
Mankind: the Quran's final surah, seeking refuge from the whisperer. Al-Falaq shelters you from harms outside; an-Nas from the quieter war inside.
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ
Qul aʿūdhu bi-rabbi n-nās
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,
Refuge with the Lord of mankind: the relationship comes first, Lord, before King, before God.
مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Maliki n-nās
The King of mankind,
The King of mankind: whatever powers seem to rule, sovereignty is His.
إِلَـٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Ilāhi n-nās
The God of mankind,
The God of mankind: three titles stacked like three locks on one door.
مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ
Min sharri l-waswāsi l-khannās
From the evil of the retreating whisperer,
The whisperer who retreats: the enemy's method is suggestion, not force, and he flees the remembrance of God.
ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Alladhī yuwaswisu fī ṣudūri n-nās
Who whispers into the chests of mankind,
He whispers into the chests: temptation arrives disguised as your own thought.
مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ
Mina l-jinnati wa-n-nās
From among jinn and mankind.
From jinn and from people: whispers come through unseen suggestion and through human voices too. Knowing the channel is half the defence, and the refuge for both is the same Lord.
