Science and the Quran
A word of honesty first: the Quran is a book of guidance, not a science textbook, and Muslims do it no favours by torturing verses into anachronistic physics. What genuinely strikes many readers, including scientists, is different: a seventh-century text that repeatedly points at nature and says look, and whose descriptions keep turning out to age remarkably well.
Here are the passages most often discussed, with fair commentary. The Quran's own framing: "We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth." (41:53)
Water and life
“Do the disbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them, and We made from water every living thing?”
Quran 21:30
Biology's consensus is that life arose in water and that water is essential to every known organism. To a seventh-century desert audience, "every living thing from water" was far from obvious. Muslims read this as a sign; the honest framing is resonance, not a physics paper.
An expanding heaven
“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are expanding it.”
Quran 51:47
The Arabic (musi'un) carries the sense of expanding or making vast. Cosmic expansion was discovered in 1929. Some classical commentators read it as vastness, some as ongoing expansion; the verse accommodates what Hubble found, which is itself remarkable for a pre-telescope text.
The developing embryo
“We created man from an extract of clay, then placed him as a drop in a firm lodging, then We made the drop into a clinging form ('alaqah), then the clinging form into a chewed-like lump, then made from the lump bones, and clothed the bones with flesh.”
Quran 23:12-14
'Alaqah means a clinging thing, a leech-like form, or a clot; the implanted embryo does cling to the uterine wall, and the "chewed lump" (mudghah) description fits the somite stage visually. Stated fairly: the sequence tracks development in a way that impressed embryologists like Keith Moore, while remaining descriptive language, not clinical terminology.
Mountains as pegs
“Have We not made the earth a resting place, and the mountains as pegs?”
Quran 78:6-7
Mountains have deep crustal "roots" (isostasy), pegs being an apt image for structures with most of their bulk below the surface. A poetic image that geology later gave precise content; again, resonance rather than proof.
The barrier between seas
“He released the two seas, meeting side by side; between them is a barrier neither of them transgresses.”
Quran 55:19-20
Where fresh and salt water bodies meet (and where differing seas meet), haloclines and density gradients keep the waters distinct for great distances, a phenomenon documented by modern oceanography and visible at estuaries like the Amazon's.
The lying forelock
“No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock: a lying, sinning forelock.”
Quran 96:15-16
The verse pins lying and wilful sin to the front of the head; the prefrontal cortex is the brain's seat of planning, deception, and moral decision-making. A striking localisation, offered here for what it is: striking.
The bigger point
Islam's deepest claim about science is not hidden facts but a licence: the universe is rational, studying it is worship, and no discovery threatens the One who authored both the world and the book. That licence built the golden age: algebra, optics, and hospitals, and the first word of revelation is still "Read".
