Learn · After the letters

Reading trainer

You know the letters; now watch them join hands. Work through the stages in order: try to read each word aloud before revealing the answer. By the end of this page you will have read the opening of the Quran from its own script.

Not done the alphabet yet? Start with the Arabic letters.

Stage 1 · Letters join hands

Arabic connects its letters like English cursive. Look at each word, name the letters you recognise, then tap to check your reading. Vowel marks: a small dash above = "a", below = "i", a small curl above = "u".

Stage 2 · Words you already say

These are words you've been saying since the phrasebook; now read them from the script itself.

Stage 3 · The Bismillah, word by word

Your first full Quranic line, the one that opens nearly every chapter. Read each word, then say the whole line: Bismillahi r-rahmani r-rahim.

Stage 4 · Al-Fatiha begins

The opening words of the Quran's opening chapter. After this, continue in the memorisation tool with the reading skills you now have.

Read all of it? Take a moment: a few weeks ago these were squiggles. Continue with surah memorisation and tajweed basics.
