Islam, for Jews
Of all the world's religions, none is structurally closer to Judaism than Islam: uncompromising monotheism, revealed law governing daily life, no incarnation, no intercessor priesthood, dietary law, circumcision, and a liturgical language. This page honours that closeness, and it doesn't pretend the last century's politics away.
The family resemblance
Say the Shema and the Shahada in the same breath and hear it: "Hear O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is One" and "there is no god but God". Tawhid is the Shema's thesis carried forward: a God with no body, no image, no partners, and no son, which is precisely the theology Judaism guarded alone for centuries. From there the parallels compound: halakha and Sharia (scholars' law reasoned from revelation, responsa and fatwas, even the same word-root for legal reasoning); kashrut and halal; Hebrew and Arabic, sibling tongues where Shalom and Salam are the same word; three daily services and five daily prayers; Yom Kippur's fast and Ashura's, which the Prophet ﷺ adopted saying "we are closer to Moses than you", and Moses (Musa) is the most-mentioned human in the entire Quran.
Where we part
Two claims Judaism doesn't accept: that the line of prophecy ran through Ishmael as well as Isaac and culminated in Muhammad ﷺ, and that the Quran is a further revelation binding on all peoples rather than a covenant with one. Islam, for its part, reveres the covenant at Sinai as genuine revelation and honours Israel's prophets wholesale; its claim is continuation, not replacement of the God of Abraham, and the Quran addresses the Children of Israel by name, as family being argued with, more than any other community.
The history, honestly
For most of fourteen centuries, the Muslim world was where Jews fared best: Umar's covenant readmitted Jews to Jerusalem after Byzantine bans; the Geniza world of Cairo and the "golden age" of Sepharad produced Maimonides, who wrote in Arabic and served a Muslim court; and when Christendom expelled Iberia's Jews in 1492, the Ottoman sultan sent ships. There were also dhimmi-era indignities and episodic persecutions; this site records that history without varnish, for those who come asking. And there is the modern wound: a political conflict over land that is real, painful, and not a theological necessity; Muslims and Jews prayed and traded side by side for a millennium before it and do so in cities worldwide today. Judge the theology on the theology; the Quran itself demands justice even against one's own (4:135).
