New Muslim path
Your first year
The Muslim year is a wheel of seasons, and your first turn around it is full of firsts nobody schedules for you. Here is the whole cycle, from wherever you're standing on it now (this month is highlighted). Deeper detail on each month lives in the months explainer.
Muharram
Your first Islamic New Year arrives without fireworks: the Hijri year turns quietly, with reflection instead of countdowns. Try the Ashura fast (the 9th-10th); a two-day fast that expiates a year is a gentle first taste of fasting before Ramadan ever arrives.
Safar
An ordinary month, and that's its lesson: most of the Muslim year is unspectacular consistency. Good month to fix your weakest prayer and learn one new du'a.
Rabi' al-Awwal
The Prophet's ﷺ birth month. Communities differ on celebrating Mawlid (some do, some don't; you'll notice, and it's fine); everyone agrees on the month's real invitation: read his life. Start the Seerah now if you haven't.
Rabi' al-Thani
Quiet again. If you converted recently, this is prime 30-day-journey or days-31-90 territory: build in the calm.
Jumada al-Awwal
Watch for your first "cultural Islam vs Islam" moment around now: an aunty's rule that isn't in the books, a practice that's Somali or Pakistani rather than Islamic. Learn to ask, kindly: "is that religion or culture?" Both deserve respect; only one binds you.
Jumada al-Thani
Halfway checkpoint. By now the mosque should know your face; if it doesn't, this month's task is two Jumu'ahs and one name learned.
Rajab
Your first sacred month with advance notice: deeds weigh heavier, so pick one small extra (voluntary fast, nightly Quran page). You'll hear about the Isra and Mi'raj, the night journey; read the story, it's one of Islam's most breathtaking.
Sha'ban
The training month: the Prophet ﷺ fasted more in Sha'ban than any month outside Ramadan. Do two or three practice fasts now; your first Ramadan is transformed by arriving in shape. Also: settle your suhoor logistics (alarm, food) this month, not at 3am on day one.
Ramadan
The summit, and nothing on this list prepares you for how much you'll love it by week two. Read the survival guide, find one community iftar a week minimum, guard the last ten nights, and pay zakat al-Fitr before Eid prayer. You will miss this month when it leaves; everyone does.
Shawwal
Your first Eid! Go to the prayer no matter what, say "Eid Mubarak" to everyone, and build a tradition of your own. Then, before the month ends, try the six fasts of Shawwal: with Ramadan they count as a year of fasting, and after thirty days of practice, six more is easier than it sounds.
Dhul Qa'dah
Sacred month, quiet month: the year's deep breath before Hajj season. Good time to audit the year honestly: what stuck, what slid, what next.
Dhul Hijjah
You'll watch your first Hajj from afar and feel a pull you didn't expect; that's normal, and the intention "one day, if He invites me" is itself worship. The first ten days are the year's greatest; fast the Day of Arafah (expiates two years), celebrate your first Eid al-Adha, and consider a qurbani donation through any Muslim charity. Then the year turns, and this time, you've seen the whole wheel.
Made it around the wheel once? The second lap is deeper: the deepening tracks are next.
