Answering objections
What Muslims debate
A common criticism pictures Islam as a monolith that permits no questions. Here is the actual state of play: the arguments Muslims conduct with each other, in public, in journals and fatwa councils, right now. Agreement on the core (one God, one messenger, one book) has always coexisted with vigorous disagreement past it; the scholars' saying is that disagreement of the learned is a mercy.
Evolution
Some scholars reject human evolution outright as contradicting the Adam narrative; others accept evolutionary biology wholesale with Adam as a divinely appointed ensoulment within it; a large middle accepts evolution for all life while treating Adam's creation as a special case.
Worth knowing The Quran has no six-day-young-earth chronology ("days" are explicitly epochs, 70:4), which is why this debate is quieter in Islam than in some Christian circles; Muslim biologists overwhelmingly just do biology.
Music
A classical position prohibits instrumental music from certain hadith; another classical position (famously in Andalusia, and argued at length by al-Ghazali for spiritual audition) permits what doesn't accompany sin. Contemporary scholars split the same way, which is why one practising Muslim writes nasheeds and another plays jazz.
Worth knowing Both camps agree on content limits; the dispute is the instruments themselves. The stereotype of a music-free Islam erases a millennium of ouds, qawwali, and West African griot Islam.
Moon sighting vs calculation
Does Ramadan begin with a physically sighted crescent (the classical, literal reading of the hadith) or can astronomical calculation, which is now exact, stand in? Major councils have ruled each way, and communities in one city genuinely start Ramadan a day apart.
Worth knowing This site's own settings expose the choice, which is the honest response: it's a live, respectable disagreement, not a scandal.
Modern finance
Everyone agrees riba is prohibited; the fight is over what counts. Are Islamic mortgages genuinely different or interest re-labelled? Are income-contingent student loans riba? Is paper money itself riba-bearing by design? Sharia boards, jurists, and economists argue all of it in journals and fatwa councils continuously.
Worth knowing The money guide on this site deliberately reports ranges instead of verdicts, because the verdicts genuinely differ.
The scope of hijab
Mainstream jurisprudence across the four schools holds head covering obligatory; a minority of contemporary scholars argue the Quranic texts mandate modesty whose seventh-century form was the khimar without making the form itself eternal law. The debate runs through journals, not just Twitter.
Worth knowing What no side holds: that coercion is valid, or that a woman's hijab status measures her faith.
Islam and the modern state
Islamists argue for states implementing law from the top; a strong scholarly current (including major traditional authorities) argues classical Sharia presumes decentralised scholars' law, not modern state machinery, and that "Islamic state" is a twentieth-century invention; still others argue secular constitutional states best protect the conditions Islam actually requires.
Worth knowing The fiercest critics of politicised Islam are usually Muslim scholars, a fact invisible from outside.
Women's religious leadership
Women teaching men, issuing fatwas, and judging: classically attested and continuing (Aisha taught the companions; women muftis exist across history). Women leading mixed congregational prayer: mainstream schools say no; a minority of contemporary scholars argue for it from an early precedent (Umm Waraqa). Women's mosque access and scholarship pipelines: actively being rebuilt, with the tradition's own history as the argument.
Worth knowing The recovery of the female scholars' biographical record (al-muhaddithat, thousands of named women hadith teachers) has itself shifted this debate in the last generation.
Reform, and how
Traditionalists hold the classical schools' methodology suffices for every era; modernists argue for renewed ijtihad (fresh legal reasoning) from the sources; maqasid scholars foreground the law's stated purposes (life, faith, intellect, family, property) as the engine. All three camps write books against each other, in the open.
Worth knowing A tradition arguing about its own method is a tradition with a working immune system. The "monolithic unthinking mass" of the polemics does not exist, and never did: Islamic civilisation's core genre is scholars disagreeing in writing.
